Themes of Always Running
This novel contains many important themes. The many themes in this novel include discrimination, perseverance, self-confidence, and violence. Discrimination is most likely the most controversial topic throughout the entirety of this novel. Luis was faced with such discrimination pretty much ever since he was born and faced it throughout his entire life. Even when living in Mexico, his dad was discriminated against because he was accused of stealing money from the very school that he himself worked at. Hi family had to move to California, where discrimination became an even bigger issue, not only to him, but to his family as well. This is was ultimately led him to join a gang just so he could feel wanted.
This novel also dealt with perseverance and self-confidence. These two themes sort of coexist with each other. Throughout the story, Luis was faced with many difficult choices that he had to make. These choices ranged from performing gang related activities such as shootings and robberies all the way to leaving the gang behind to pursue his literary career or remaining loyal to the gang. Luis wasn't perfect and made the wrong choices most of the time, however he believed in himself and persevered. this allowed for him to finally withdraw from the gang life and pursue a career in writing.
This novel also heavily dealt with violence. The book pretty much revealed around violence in the gangs. Luis refused to do any acts of violence at first. Whoever, as he spent more time in the gang, something changed in him making him believe violence was the answer to many occasions. This was probably due to observational learning form the other gang members. In the end however, he realized violence isn't the right thing and turned away from it once and for all.
