Literary Techniques Used in Always Running
This novel excelled due to its use of literary techniques such as style and language, point of view, and plot.
Style and language played a major role in the formation of this story. This novel incorporates the Spanish language to further enhance the book's experience. Spanish is used in order to demonstrate the exact language that was used in such gangs located in Los Angeles. Also, slang that is used by the gangs are used in this novel to show how the gangs actually behaved and acted.
Point of view was another literary technique used well in this book. This story was seen and described through the eyes of Luis Rodriguez, the author of this novel. If the novel was told through someone else's point of view the story would not nearly deliver the same experience as if it were told by Rodriguez. Since the story is viewed through his eyes, the story shows his opinions and emotions on certain events and situations. “Cry, child, for those without tears have a grief which never ends.” His view in this statement depicts how he sees what is right and wrong in this world and can see his reasoning as to why he does certain things.
Plot is yet another really well done literary technique used in this story. The plot is well developed and follows the cycle of Luis's decisions. Over the course of the story, Luis constantly changes how he behaves and tries to get change his ways. In the beginning he is an innocent child until he joins the gang. His involvement in the gang causes him to change into a more violent person. After spending more time in the gang he realizes he should not be doing such horrible things. He changes his ways and eventually turns his life around by becoming an author. This plot development adds to the overall enjoyment and experience of the story.
This is how the use of literary techniques helps the book excel using point of view, plot, and style and language.
